Mental illness can happen to anyone, literally! It does not matter where you are from or what is the color of your skin,  your profession or how much money you have. Like any of us, popular celebrities also suffer from mental illnesses.

Here is a list of some of the Hollywood celebrities who suffered and have openly spoken up about their mental illnesses: 

Princess Diana

Princess Diana’s struggle with her mental health was a very public affair. Being married to the royal family and being subjected to constant criticism led to her suffering from a number of mental health problems including body image issues, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder and depression. Her mental illnesses led to self-induced vomiting or bulimia and self-mutilation (cutting herself).

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain is said to have Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder, although it was not diagnosed. He committed suicide at the age of 28. Post his suicide, many researches were done on his life and his songs, through which it can be found that he suffered from manic depression.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus (an autoimmune disease) and had to get a kidney transplant to save her life. Post her diagnosis and transplant, she shared that she had been dealing with anxiety and depression for a long time, however lupus contributed more to her pain, anxiety and depression. She had even gone on a social media hiatus for emotional rehabilitation.

Dwayne “ The Rock” Johnson

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of the most sought after celebrities in the world. He might look as though he is a superhuman force in the earth, but he recently shared that he had been suffering from depression for a long time. His battle with his mental health has been almost a decade long.

Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen suffered from Postpartum Depression after giving birth to her daughter. This mental health condition affects women after they give birth. The condition develops within 4 to 6 weeks after giving birth, but it can sometimes take several months to appear. While sharing her story with postpartum depression, she mentions that she had everything perfect in her life, yet she felt unhappy.

Chris Evans

Chris Evans has enjoyed a great amount of superhero fame and love. Yet, our beloved Captain America has suffered from social anxiety and said that he has a noisy brain. Trying to shut down the noise has been the most difficult part for him. He believes that facing your fears and asking for help are two of the biggest things to do to cope with the anxiety.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has been suffering from drug addiction and mental illnesses for most of her adult life. She was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Bulimia and Depression which led to self harming and suicidal thoughts. In her tell-all documentary called Simply Complicated, she shares that her struggles with mental illnesses and drug addiction have been exhausting, but she tries to cope with them with her music and boxing.

Pete Doherty

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and an individual’s sense of identity. Pete Doherty suffered from BPD and had numerous traits such as impulsiveness, shame, excessive anger, volatile relationships.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga recently opened up about her assault story and her Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. She says that her first experience with assault triggered her PTSD and a health condition called fibromyalgia. She says that whenever she has a PTSD attack, her diaphragm seizes up, she has difficulty breathing, her whole body goes into spasm and she just starts crying. She is getting better at handling it as she grows older.

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake has OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) mixed with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). OCD is a psychiatric anxiety disorder often characterized by obsessive thoughts, compulsions or rituals. ADD is a developmental disorder, and sufferers often complain of forgetfulness, distractibility and hyperactivity.
