Movies are one of the best mediums of storytelling. Unlike novels and poems, we cannot write what the character is feeling or give emphasis on their traits through internal dialogues. We have to represent them visually.

Movies can directly touch our soul through our eyes because it has the ability to take us through a journey – a journey of emotional ride and eye-pleasing fantasy. A visually beautiful film can work as a therapy. If there is a proper collaboration between the production design team, DOP, and director they can create an interesting, engaging, and meaningful cinema that is equally visually orgasmic.

Hero (Ying Xiong) 2002

Acclaimed actors, interesting story and action-packed drama. Director Zhang Yimou’s Hero is one of the visual masterpieces that came from China in the early 21st century. This film is based on the story of Jing Ke’s assassination attempt on the King of Qin in 227 BC. Flying arrows, sword fights on water, beautiful mountains and lots of death, this movie has it all. Maybe that is why  Quentin Tarantino eventually convinced Miramax to open the film in American theaters.

In the Mood for Love (2000)

Wong Kar-wai is one of the most influential filmmakers in the world. His ‘In the Mood for Love’ is one of the best romances ever to be shot. This movie is one which is shown in every film school and appreciated by every romantic movie buff. One can spend a whole day talking about how beautifully the cinematography has enhanced the story.  In the Mood for Love is a masterpiece about betrayal, beauty, and love.

The Tree Of Life 

Written and directed by Terrence Malick, this movie is about a son’s relation with his father and how he seeks the true meaning of life. With breathtaking visual and aural beauty, this movie through its characters seeks answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in lead roles, this movie is a visual grace with a good story.

Her 

 If one movie has used color so well that it in itself becomes a character in the movie then it’s Joaquin Phoenix starrer 2013’s Her. It’s a story about a writer who falls in love with an artificial intelligence. Beautifully shot by Hoyte van Hoytema is one of the best films of the decade. From witty dialogues to soulful background score, Her is a therapy to your mind.

Samsara

Samsara, a 2011 American non-narrative documentary film of international imagery directed by Ron Fricke is not something created for us but we have been created to see it. This beautiful visual treat is the third collaboration between Director Fricke and Producer Mark Magidson. Their other two ventures: Baraka (1992) and Chronos (1985) aren’t any less than Samsara. For this visual majestic documentary, the filming lasted more than four years and took place in 25 countries across five continents. It is a must-watch a piece of art.

The Handmaiden

This erotic fantasy from Park Chan-wook, set in Korea in the 1930s is a treat to eyes, ears and mind. This gruesome thriller is sure to sweep the sand below your feet and transport you to a world where the director wants you to be and witness this visually beautiful story. If one could describe this movie in one sentence it probably would be – The Handmaiden is the master fusion of commercial and art-house cinema at its best. If you haven’t seen or heard about director Park Chan-wook’s any work then you are in for a treat watching this masterpiece.
