How to deal with depression?

Depression is a serious mental illness that exhausts your mind and body and traps you inside the vicious cycle of hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness. Just the idea of waking up in the morning or getting out of bed can feel like a battle. In such situations, dealing with what you are feeling on a daily basis can be tedious and frustrating. While we understand that you are trying to get better, the following tips might help you cope with your depression.

Reach out – Ask for help

First and foremost, if you think you have depression and/or have seen numerous symptoms of depression in yourself, reach out. Ask for help. Don’t be afraid to go to the people you love and feel safe with and ask for their help. Share your situation with someone who will understand you, validate your emotions, and most importantly, not belittle you for what you share with them. Asking for help with the right person can be a life savior.

Exercise regularly

Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy diet generates serotonin which makes you feel wholly better. Find exercises that you find enjoyable and you can maintain rhythm with. Since you might not have the energy to exercise regularly, if you like the exercise, you might feel more motivated to do it. Feeling better physically will translate into feeling better mentally.

Some activities that you can do is go on a morning run, go hiking, read a book outdoors and spend time with your friends and/or loved ones whilst doing these activities.

Seek for professional help

If you think you might have depression, you must get it professionally checked. Don’t come to a conclusion without professional guidance. Also, do not take any medication without consulting a psychiatrist. Once your depression is professionally verified, go to regular counselling sessions and you will know how to take proper action. This can be tricky as you might not get along with your therapist. So, you must find a therapist that you are comfortable with.
